What is CentOS-3?

CentOS is an Enterprise-class Linux Distribution derived from sources freely provided to the public by a prominent North American Enterprise Linux vendor. CentOS conforms fully with the upstream vendors redistribution policy and aims to be 100% binary compatible. (CentOS mainly changes packages to remove upstream vendor branding and artwork.) CentOS is free. For more information please visit the CentOS Web Site.

What is CS?

The Cluster Suite or CS is a of technologies working together to provide data integrity and the ability to maintain application availability in the event of a failure. Administrators can deploy enterprise cluster solutions using a combination of hardware redundancy along with the failover and load-balancing technologies. It is not requires by GFS but may be used in conjunction.

What is GFS?

The Global File System or GFS is a cluster file system with full POSIX semantics. It is designed for shared storage systems but can also be used by exporting existing storage over the network. For more information visit the RedHat GFS Site or the GFS Project Home Page.

Obtaining CS & GFS

CS and GFS are mirrored on the CentOS mirrors together in one directory csgfs. You can download from http://mirror.centos.org/centos/3/csgfs/i386/ or you local mirror. If you use yum you can add this to your /etc/yum.conf

[csgfs]
name=CentOS-3 CS and GFS
baseurl=http://mirror.centos.org/centos/3/csgfs/i386/
gpgcheck=1

The packages are signed with the CentOS-3 gpg key.

Installing CS & GFS

Follow the vendor instructions.

Original Announcement

Announcing CentOS 3 i386 Cluster Suite (CS) and Global File System (GFS)

CentOS csgfs is now available for CentOS-3 i386. This is a built from source
found here:

CentOS-3 csgfs combines both the Cluster Suite 3 (CS) and the Global File System
6.0 (GFS) into a single directory (csgfs). This makes it convenient if you use
both but you can still use just the CS or the GFS on their own as you require.

The manual for these products can be found in the rh-cs-en-3-2.noarch.rpm and
rh-gfs-en-6.0-4.noarch.rpm packages.

The following web sites relate to this software:
http://www.redhat.com/mailman/listinfo/linux-cluster
http://www.redhat.com/docs/manuals/csgfs/
http://www.redhat.com/software/rha/cluster/
http://www.redhat.com/software/rha/gfs/

Please remember that CentOS provides community support via the centos@centos.org
mailing list, forums and irc.

If you need payed up support then CentOS csgfs is probably not for you.

You do not need extra hardware to use this software. Without hardware like shared
storage and fencing equipment you may not receive all the benefits that this
software can deliver.

Updates to this software often lag significantly behind the core CentOS updates.
For this reason you should take appropriate measures to protect the security of
your servers which are using CentOS csgfs.

You can find CentOS csgfs under the centos/3/csgfs/i386/ directory of your
favorite CentOS mirror. Yum headers are provided so you can easily integrate with
the standard CentOS package management tools.

Depending on your fencing method, you may require an extra perl module
perl-Net-SSLeay. This can be obtained from Dag/RpmForge.

Enjoy.
